A senior lawyer generally refers to an experienced lawyer who has been practicing for many years and has achieved success in their professional field. The years of practice for senior lawyers can be said to be 6 years, 8 years, or 10 years; for this article, let's take the higher standard of 10 years.
Here are a few characteristics of senior lawyers for your consideration.
1. A large number of social part-time jobs
Senior lawyers typically have numerous social part-time jobs, such as legislative consulting experts, part-time professors or associate professors at universities, members of think tanks, political consultative conference members, government advisors, or heads of bar associations or specialized committees. There is always a role that suits them.
The existence of these numerous part-time jobs also indicates that these lawyers possess a certain level of social influence and that their professional abilities are widely recognized. According to my theory, these lawyers have moved past difficult times; even those who wish to maintain their independence and do not want to hold positions in bar associations will gladly accept titles such as researchers or professors at well-known universities.
2. A large number of successful cases
Strictly speaking, a lawyer without successful cases, even if they have been practicing for many years, cannot be considered a senior lawyer in the strict sense; they can only be regarded as an old lawyer.
For example, a criminal defense lawyer who has been practicing for 10 years but cannot present several classic cases of non-prosecution, withdrawal of prosecution, exemption from criminal punishment, acquittal, commutation of death sentences, or reduced charges would not be appropriately referred to as a senior lawyer.
Lawyers are entrusted to handle matters for their clients, and being able to achieve effective defense results earns them respect. Those lawyers who have lost every case lack successful examples; they can serve as cautionary tales but are still far from being considered senior lawyers.
3. Industry influence
Senior lawyers should possess influence within the industry and gain recognition from their peers. This influence can be local or national.
Nationally renowned lawyers need to have handled successful cases across the country, while province-wide renowned lawyers must have handled successful cases within their own regions. Local renowned lawyers should have more than 10 successful cases in the past three years. Such lawyers easily gain recognition in the industry, and those who frequently help their peers solve difficult problems or are recommended by clients to their relatives and friends for representation are all considered influential lawyers in the industry.
